Arched Windows Take Shape: Framing Techniques

Day 7 marked an exciting milestone — installing the window frames! After breakfast, we began outlining the arched openings using the specialty earthbag “pillow system” for curvature. This involves compacting smaller bags in front to angle back bags at an incline.

Mariana taught us critical structural details. We filled and tamped custom-sized bags to contour along the lumber header affixed at the top. Keeping the length tight maintains compression strength. The arch should sit on compacted bedding bags and have at least one reinforced barbed wire between base rows.

Proper shading integration was also covered to avoid moisture damage. We have overflow bags on standby since the base often settles over time. Framing windows in an earthbag dome requires meticulous positioning but allows gorgeous light.

For our arched tops, we used the technique of angling cap bags gradually more acutely towards the center. The header board helps guide height and shape. Once stuffed full, we will sculpt cob (wet clay mixture) around the exterior for a smoothly finished sill.

Learning specialized construction methods from patient teacher Mariana has been invaluable. We celebrated our progress with a lively community pizza party! As the dome nears completion through combined team efforts, my heart swells with pride and gratitude.

I’m cherishing every moment with my new international found family — Roe from Ireland, Susti from India, Purna from India, Anirudh da from India, Suman da from Nepal, Alios from Lebanon, Raheem from England, Loue from Texas USA, Louis from Mexico, Alois from Spain, and Chandra Mohan ji from India. We’ve also bonded with our fantastic local helpers Gyanu dijju, Bimla dijju, and Hariabol da.

Our hosts Orion and Mariana have created such an uplifting community ethos that ripples out into the surrounding village too. We often take care of their happy 5 month old son Camilo. And I can’t forget our loyal camp dogs Rakshya, Kabita, and Kikya who make this feel even more like home!

Playing bongo drums around the campfire with new friends perfectly capped off an enchanting day. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to learn, grow, and connect on this adventure. Now to rest up for a rejuvenating hike on our Sunday day off!
