On Day 9 we fueled up with a scrumptious breakfast bounty thanks to Anirudh and Orion. Their caring efforts set us up for a demanding day ahead. I was already feeling weary, but Mama doctored my injured thumb so I could build without pain.

We stacked four full layers, elevating the structure as the dome tapered inward. Working at heights requires caution on the progressively steep bags. But efficiency improves as the circles shrink. In our afternoon lesson, Mariana expanded on techniques for doors, windows and other openings. Here we’re using the specialty “pillow method” with incremental front bags shifting angle. Other options include arching cut-out flaps or building temporary wood structural support.
Master architect Nader Khalili originated these earthbag innovations through tireless experimentation. His guiding manifesto “Sidewalks to the Future” and “Housing for the Next Millennium” reveal a radical vision of communities thriving through earth-harmony. Studying Khalili’s wisdom helps contextualize this ancient, futuristic building art.Though weary from scaling the towering earthen hive, I’m proud of our progress manifesting this dream dwelling through natural principles. Our shared gratitude at dinner fueled me through clean-up duty. Now for rest before the final dome-enclosing stages!
Let me know if you want more specifics on the various earthbag opening techniques or information on founding father Nader Khalili’s earth-building philosophies and techniques. Only 4 days left for our natural wonder to fully take shape!
