My First Day Learning to Build a Superadobe Dome

I arrived bright and early on the first day of my Superadobe Dome building course, led by our mentor Mariana Jimenez. Mariana is a talented engineer with years of experience constructing these incredible naturally-made structures out of earthbags and dirt. I could not wait to learn from her expertise!

We gathered as a group in Thamel then made the long journey out to the build site, taking in the gorgeous scenery along the way. When we finally arrived at the camp after several hours, we were greeted by Orion who gave us a full tour of the facilities. I was amazed by the striking dome structures already standing tall, constructed by previous student groups.

After settling into our tents, we came together for dinner and took turns sharing what we were grateful for. Then we were divided into chore crews of 4 people, responsible for helping cook meals and keep the camp tidy. As night fell, I could barely sleep because I was so excited for our first day of building our own superadobe dome from the earth up.

Stay tuned for my next update where I’ll share more details on the hands-on building process! Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions about what it was like on-site during this unique sustainable building course. I’m happy to provide more insider information on this incredible learning experience that has deeply impacted me.
